The poems in this volume take us to three major cities in Cameroon, Buea, Eric Ngalle’s hometown and a historically important space, Douala, the economic capital of Cameroon and Yaoundé, the political capital. Each poet brings to this space his unique sensibilities. Mike Jenkins has been a co-editor for 26 years of Red Poets magazine which has a socialist background. His poems reveal a commitment to the common man. Ifor ap Glyn is the National Poet of Wales. He wears the title well as all his poems are originally written in Welsh, and then translated to English. Eric Ngalle Charles’s poems on the other hand are steeped in Bakweri oral traditions. Nevertheless, this is no poetic tourism with resonances of cultural appropriation and exoticism. The poems navigate personal and public spaces concretizing for readers the role that poetry can play to bring down the walls fashioned by society to keep us apart.
