A novel set in rural Wales explores the tensions within Welsh society in the 1950s: tensions between Welsh- and English-speaking Wales, between North and South, between those who wanted to preserve their heritage and those who wanted prosperity at any cost, between the generation who had experienced the war and the young people who see Wales within a wider European context.

Politics, life and love in 1950s Wales: new novel is a “must read” A brand new novel set in 1950s Wales has been described as a “book that should be on everyone’s reading list” by prominent Welsh author Angharad Tomos. Amongst the many others offering rave reviews of first-time author Gareth Thomas’ novel, A Welsh Dawn is former First Minister for Wales Rhodri Morgan, Jane Hutt AM and Dafydd Wigley. “My intention was to explore the tensions that existed within Welsh society of the 1950s,” explains Gareth Thomas, who has worked as an actor, teacher, writer and director. “Tensions between Welsh and English speaking Wales, between north and south, between those who wanted to preserve their heritage and those who wanted prosperity at any cost and between those who longed for a strong Welsh government and those who preferred to lose their Welsh identity within a British state. Not unlike today. “Alongside the political manoeuvrings, the novel follows the lives of an imaginary family from Dyffryn Nantlle as they react and adapt to the transformational political and economic events of the time,” he explains further. “These include the conflicts between Huw T Edwards and Henry Brooke, the campaign of the Unemployed Movement of Dyffryn Nantlle, the meetings of the Council for Wales and the turmoil surrounding the drowning of Capel Celyn. Angharad Tomos has stated that A Welsh Dawn is “… a book I would have loved to have written… There is an examination of the Welsh language through the eyes of a young non-Welsh speaking boy, and that it itself is new.” “Despite exploring the struggle for survival of the Welsh language, I decided to write the novel in English,” adds the author. “I was anxious to gain a readership amongst non-Welsh speakers who nevertheless understand the importance of the language to national definition.” Gareth Thomas was born to Rhondda parents, and was educated in Rhyl, Caernarfon, Newport, Cardiff and London. At the age of 50, living in England and frustrated by the loss of his own Welsh connections, he set about learning the language. In 2011 he moved back to Wales with his wife, and they reside in Cowbridge. Gareth is launching A Welsh Dawn at Gŵyl Arall (Another Festival), Caernarfon in the company of Dafydd Wigley on Sunday the 20th of July and at the Pierhead, Cardiff Bay on Monday, 15th of September. “… highly entertaining, well-written and a story which really grips the reader.” Dafydd Wigley “Very good, and deals with a weird and wonderful era in Welsh politics that tends to be neglected.” Rhodri Morgan.
