Aeta J Jardine, a prolific watercolourist, was born in 1886 in Georgetown, Demerara, where her Glaswegian father Charles Kennedy Jardine was proprietor of the leading daily newspaper, 'The Demerara Chronicle'. From 1899 to 1912 she and her mother, her elder sister Jet S Jardine and their younger brother lived in Glasgow. Both sisters studied at the Glasgow School of Art. In 1920 the sisters moved to London and Aeta enrolled in the Regent Street Polytechnic. They lived together, painted and exhibited all their lives. Aeta and Jet are direct descendants of Scipio Kennedy, an enslaved African child born at the end of the 17th century, who became a valued servant at Culzean Castle, Ayrshire. Caroline Palmer grew up in York and was educated at the University of Oxford, in Zoology and Biological Anthropology. She now lives in Wales and is a garden writer, columnist and researcher, and the author of books and articles on historic gardens and 19th-century estate history. Aeta Jardine’s sketch diary gives an intriguing glimpse into early twentieth-century Glasgow culture, conjured through the observant eyes of a young woman artist. Created for the entertainment of her immediate family, you can almost hear the squeals of laughter which her work elicited. Her techniques range from pencil drafts to intricate pen-and-ink drawings and finished watercolours, accompanied by a wry commentary. Some even have a strip-cartoon quality. The bound book in which she worked displayed samples of the range of different notepapers manufactured by Alex Pirie & Sons Ltd. Her illustrations acquire an added, serendipitous dimension through the printed specifications on each page. Floating over many of Aeta’s sketches are the product names, descriptions and watermark designs for 44 different writing papers. Technical terms from 1900 echo to us across a century – parchment, vellum, wove, laid, post, pinched – evoking another world. The book will be launched at an exhibition at the Reid Gallery, Glasgow School of Art, which opens on 18 September 2026, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Royal Scottish Academy.
