Rod O’Grady is an actor who has worked in London and New York. His stage play, ‘A Foolish Fancy – How not to Get Ahead in the Theatre’ was a Time Out critic’s choice on the London Fringe. He has voiced the audiobook for Bigfoot Mountain, his first children’s book.

It is summer next to the sea on the west coast. Apart from two neighbours and Musto the dog, twelve-year-old Minnie and her step-father Dan are alone. There are no customers for their holiday cabins due to a number of forest fires. Nearly-normal domestic routine and the circle of life that is nature continue as they come to terms with the death of Minnie's mother, whose spirit is ever present through her garden, her recipes and messages to her loved ones. Meantime a Bigfoot community also have to adapt to the effects of the burning in order to survive, continuing their ages-old way of life with the animals who also harvest the habitat, coming out of their usual isolation by relocating and moving closer to the humans and finding ways to live in harmony with the people who share their homeland. Whilst the author acknowledges that the location is invented, illustrator Jess Mason's graphics ground the book and bring it to life with endpaper plans of the holiday cabin site, line drawing images of flora and fauna native to the north west of the USA and an intriguing puzzle. By following the pine cones and footprints the reader is lead ingeniously into the different existences as the stories of Minnie and Dan and Kaayii's clan play out against one another. A combination of working through grief, exciting exploration of a woodland environment and its ancient mysteries, plus responses to a natural ecological crisis create the ideal conditions for an adventure with unexpected consequences. Lower secondary students seeking a compassionate and contemporary tale set against a parallel forest world and eco-friendly survival may enjoy this first novel by Roderick O'Grady, whilst hoping for future stories.
