World War II has just been declared. and four children in a small Welsh town find that war paranoia is getting to them. They begin to follow a strange woman, believing her to be a German spy. Before long, they find themselves caught up in a robbery and a mine collapse. The town is fictional and, except for its name and the presence of an abandoned mine, it has little of the Welsh about it. What does work well in this novel is the fact that different chapters are told from different characters' perspectives: Sometimes the children are the central focus, while other chapters reveal more of the villain who unexpectedly grows a conscience. We also meet a German fighter pilot, a nosy journalist and a range of parents, all of whom are in a panic about their missing children. I must say that this book left me wanting more! Swindells is a fine writer, and it felt like he had simplified his usual complexities to create a story suitable for nine-year-olds. Both my daughters, who are aged eight and ten, are very eager to read the story, having had the first chapter and blurb read to them, so it seems Swindells has hit his target audience perfectly!
