Sitting in a wine bar, Elaine Blake is informed by her supposed best friend and another unknown woman that her husband was a spy and that he is now dead. Her world has imploded, and Elaine must somehow make sense of what her life has really been about and what on earth it will become. G. B. Williams writes in an easy, flowing style and the reader is swept along by the tumult that is all but swamping Elaine. She has always been obedient to the rules and control of her husband, but now she’s on her own. There are some tears but not many; it hasn’t been a happy marriage, more of a prison sentence. However, there is no time for Elaine to adjust and come to terms with this new reality. She realises when she gets home, having walked away from Kiera and the other woman, that the only reason she was told the news in a wine bar was so that her house could be searched. Her dead husband has some evidence of treachery that the secret services would very much like to get hold of, and though there is no sign of this intrusion in her home she’s certain it has happened. From the outside, Elaine appears conventional and boring. To secret agent Letterman, assigned to discover whether Elaine knows or finds anything of the hidden evidence, she’s an ordinary middle-aged woman. As he watches and listens to her from his surveillance van outside her house, he puzzles over her. She’s obsessively tidy, he knows that much having searched her house, but other than that she’s a closed book. But there is way more to Elaine Blake than meets the eye. When she receives a plea for help from one of her many (now adult) foster children, she bursts into action. Her son Lazlo says he’s in danger over her husband’s evidence and that her husband is actually still alive. Despite the death certificate that’s been delivered to her, Elaine has her own doubts. Nothing is clear; there are too many layers of deceit for her not to question everything. She sets off to Paris to find Lazlo, to help him if she can, and is drawn into a world of secret agents, traitors and thugs. It seems her misspent teenage years have given her resources she really needs in this situation. Haplessly trying to keep up with her is Letterman. He needs that evidence in order to keep his job, and he’s certain she has it, so he follows her as much as he can, despite her often unwittingly evading him. He feels a growing respect for the housewife who seems to walk without fear into ever more challenging and dangerous situations. Breaking Free is the first in a series of Elaine Blake crime novels. G. B. Williams has created a heroine who constantly surprises and outpaces both the reader and the underworld into which she has descended. At the end of Breaking Free we are left with so many unanswered questions that a swift purchase of the next novel is the only way to find peace of mind.
