A novel by the award-winning novelist Angharad Price, whose classic, O! Tyn y Gorchudd won her the Literary Medal at the 2002 National Eisteddfod. This novel tells the story of Jaman Jones returning to his home town, after inheriting his aunt's house. It offers an insight into Welsh urban life at the beginning of the 21st century.

Dair blynedd yn ôl, roedd cael dychwelyd i Gaernarfon yn bleser i Angharad Price, ac felly dyma fynd ati i geisio dangos ei gwerthfawrogiad o’r dref drwy ysgrifennu nofel amdani dan yr enw Caersaint . Mae’r gyfrol yn dilyn ymdrechion Jaman Jones i ‘ganfod ei hun’ wedi iddo etifeddu ty Arfonia Bugbird. Wedi bod i ffwrdd o Gaersaint ers sawl blwyddyn mae ei ddychweliad yn creu chwilfrydedd ymysg ei gymdogion. Cawn ddod i adnabod nifer o’r trigolion lleol gan gynnwys Babs Inc, golygydd y papur lleol, rhai o yfwyr ffraeth y Mona a Tonwen Bold, gwraig Med Medra – y gwr sydd am ‘godi Caersaint yn ei hôl’ ac ennill etholiad i fod yn faer y dref. Ond mae nifer o drigolion yn gwrthwynebu. A fydd rhywun yn gallu ei rwystro? Er mai Caernarfon yw cefnlen y nofel hon, mae’n stori berthnasol i unrhyw dref yn unrhyw ran o Gymru, ac mae’r awdur yn sicr na fydd neb o drigolion Caernarfon yn llwyr adnabod trigolion Caersaint. "Dwi wedi bod yn ofalus i beidio rhoi neb go iawn yn y nofel, ond dydy hynny ddim yn golygu nad oes yna bethau dwi wedi clywed pobl go iawn yn eu dweud yn y nofel. Mae llawer o’r sgwrsio yn y gyfrol wedi ei ysbrydoli gan sgwrsio go iawn, ac yn aml mae’r pethau sy’n cael eu dweud yn ysbrydoli cymeriad," eglura Angharad Price a ddaw’n wreiddiol o bentref Bethel, rhyw ddwy filltir i ffwrdd o Gaernarfon. Fel pob tref arall yng Nghymru, mae gan Gaersaint ei chymeriadau, ac mae ganddi hefyd ei phroblemau, ac o’r problemau hyn y mae llawer o’r stori yn deillio. "Mi oedd yna rai pethau ro’n i eisiau eu tynnu mewn yn benodol yn y nofel, fel y tensiwn rhwng twristiaeth a threftadaeth, yn ogystal â hanes a chwedloniaeth y dref. Ond ro’n i hefyd eisiau cyfleu’r bywiogrwydd sydd yma," meddai'r awdur. A hithau wedi ennill y Fedal Ryddiaith yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Tyddewi yn 2002 a gwobr Llyfr y Flwyddyn yn 2003 gyda’i nofel ddiwethaf, O, Tyn y Gorchudd , mae Angharad bellach yn ddarlithydd Cymraeg ym Mhrifysgol Bangor. Mae llenyddiaeth, felly, yn rhan o’i bywyd dyddiol, ond gyda dau o blant ifanc, mae amser i ysgrifennu er ei phleser ei hun yn brin iawn i Angharad. "Ma’ ysgrifennu yn un o’r petha' pwysica’ yn fy mywyd i faswn i’n ei ddweud; rhywbeth sy’n ymylu ar fod yn rheidrwydd. Mae hynny’n golygu defnyddio’r ychydig amser sbâr sydd gen i, ond mae o werth yr aberth!"

It was her love for the town of Caernarfon that inspired the author Angharad Price to write her latest novel, Caersaint . Three years ago, returning to live in Caernarfon gave Angharad Price so much pleasure that she decided to put pen to paper to show her appreciation for the place she calls home and started writing a novel based on the town called Caersaint . The story follows Jaman Jones as he struggles to ‘find himself’ after inheriting Arfonia Bugbird’s house. His return to Caersaint after fleeing the town years ago awakens the curiosity of his neighbours. We’re introduced to a number of the town’s characters including the local rag’s editor, Babs Inc, a number of the Mona pub locals and Tonwen Bold, wife of Med Medra who intends to rebuild Caersaint and battle his way to win the town Mayor election. As an outsider he faces stiff opposition from the locals – will anyone be brave enough to stand in his way? Anyone familiar with Caernarfon will recognize the town as the backdrop to this novel, but its story and issues are relevant to any town in any part of Wales and Angharad is quick to point out that no one in Caernarfon will fully recognize any of Caersaint’s residents. "I’ve been very careful not to use any real people in the novel, but that doesn’t mean that things that I’ve overheard being said haven’t been used. Most of the dialogue in the book has been inspired by conversations I’ve heard, and on most occasions, it’s the conversations that have inspired the characters," explains Angharad Price who comes originally from Bethel, just outside Caernarfon. Like every other town in Wales, Caersaint has its fair share of characters, but it also has its problems, and it’s from many of these problems that the story derives. "There were some things that I particularly wanted to include in the novel, like the tension in the town between tourism and heritage, history and myths. But I also wanted to convey the liveliness of the town," says the author. Angharad Price’s second novel O, Tyn y Gorchudd won her the Prose Medal at the National Eisteddfod in 2002 and Book of the Year in 2003. She now lectures in Welsh at Bangor University where writing and Welsh literature is a part of her daily life, but with two young children, finding time to write for her own pleasure is something of a struggle. "I’d say that writing is one of the most important things in my life and borders on being a necessity. It does mean it takes up what little spare time that I have, but it’s worth the sacrifice!"
