Set in south Wales during the 1950s, the story follows the fortunes of an indecisive candidate in a parliamentary by-election involving the black arts of political intrigue, presented in a manner close enough to the truth to have the ring of authenticity. The cast of characters and their activities are described with sympathetic understanding and often much humour.

Will Hamley’s novel might not qualify as a literary masterpiece, but who’s to judge? It’s a rollicking, good read. Jeff Thomas, bordering middle-aged, feels ‘stranded on a low plateau as senior clerk in the Pontavon Treasurer’s department’. His boss, Mr. Plimson, the Treasurer, unexpectedly informs Jeff that he is the favoured candidate for the post of Deputy Treasurer, as the present incumbent is moving to Brecon. For Jeff’s ambitious family this is a splendid opportunity, and though the job is to be advertised, it’s a foregone conclusion that the job is his. Life is never simple. Jeff, a strong Labour supporter and trade unionist, is asked to stand for selection as the local parliamentary candidate. His beautiful blonde wife Janet (a great asset, as are his equally attractive children) is initially opposed to the idea, even though his promotion would give her the social standing she so desires. However, she is soon persuaded by her mother Elizabeth, whose expectations for her daughter are considerably higher, that being an MP’s wife would be of mighty benefit all round. Jeff, innocent of political intrigue and in-fighting, soon finds himself out of his comfort zone, as politics and those with a vested interest take over his life. Hamley’s story, set in south Wales, introduces the reader to post-war Britain of the 1950’s. Though there is a naivety about his writing, Hamley paints his characters with almost 3-D brilliance; as you turn the pages, they become part of your life. Quite simply, I did not want the book to end. To the reader I say – look beyond the first few pages; this man can tell a tale and, what’s more, make you laugh. Congratulations, Will Hamley!
