Originally from Belfast, Elaine Canning is a writer, editor, literary prize and festival director. She holds an MA and PhD in Hispanic Studies from Queen's University, Belfast and an MA in Creative Writing from Swansea University. She is currently Head of Strategic Public and Cultural Engagement at Swansea University, including Director of the International Dylan Thomas Prize, the Rhys Davies National Short Story Award, and the Cultural Institute. Elaine has authored a monograph and papers on Spanish Golden-Age drama, and her short stories have appeared in Nation.Cymru and The Lonely Crowd. Editor of various short story and poetry anthologies, including The Man on the Train: The Rhys Davies Short Story Award Anthology (Parthian, 2025) and New World, New Beginnings: Resilience and Connectivity through Poetry (Parthian, 2021), she is also editor of Maggie O'Farrell: Contemporary Critical Perspectives (Bloomsbury, 2024). Her debut novel, The Sandstone City, featured on Wales Arts Review’s 2022 list of top ten long-form fiction titles. Elaine is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, a former British Council Wales Board member, a literacy champion for the National Literacy Trust, and a member of the reading promotion sub- committee of the Books Council of Wales.

In ‘The Red Dance Costume,’ a young Irish dancer, desperate to give up dancing, destroys her costume each night only for it to magically repair itself. In ‘Pink Stilettos,’ Dolores’ confinement leads her to perfecting a hidden gift and stepping out of her adult daughter’s control. And in ‘Chalk Moon,’ a Welsh girl grapples with caring responsibilities and finds solace in the moon. These are characters striving for self-discovery and self-fulfilment from the shadows that torment humanity.
