Bywgraffiad yr Awdur / Author Biography

Peter Ellis was born in Nairobi Hospital in June 1949 and spent the first two years living in Isiolo on the Northern Frontier District of Kenya, where his father was District Commissioner. Peter and his family moved to Nairobi National Park in 1952 when his father became head warden there. This was their home until 1965. They lived in the Park and very soon started living with unusual animals, some were orphans, some were pets that became too much for others and other were victims of poaching. Some of these characters are in this book. Nowadays, Peter lives in Wadhurst, East Sussex, volunteering with Sussex Wildlife Trust and working in his wife’s haberdashery shop when she needs someone to cover. Peter has two grown children and three grandchildren. Child of the savannah is his debut novel, publishing alongside the children’s edition, The Prince and I.

When a lioness abandons her newborn in the Kenyan bush, the little cub is rescued from the wild and raised in a human home. There he is given a name – Prince. The son of the warden of Nairobi National Park, Peter Ellis grew up in the heart of the reserve, surrounded by the majesty of the African plains. But though Peter was no stranger to the animals of the park, never before had one shared his sofa! Prince was part of the family, a little brother with a difference: a companion, co conspirator, and playmate and all too soon, not so little at all. Through the animals he grew up with and the landscapes they inhabited, Peter recalls a youth lived with one foot in the wild, capturing the wonder and fragility of our bond with the natural world.
