Whilst there are many lakes in Snowdonia, a figure of 400 has been quoted, this book illustrates ones that are found above 450 metres (1,476 feet). As such they can truly be called 'Mountain Lakes'.

The 43 lakes chosen for this book are a personal choice and are described in alphabetical order. They are classified into 7 areas: Carneddau, Glyderau, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Moelwynion, Rhinogydd, Cadair Idris and the Migneint. Rocks in Snowdonia were formed during the Cambrian, Ordovician and Silurian ages. The Cambrian began 700 to 500 million years ago (Ordovician was named after a warlike Welsh band of people called the Ordovices). The development of lakes here is due in greater part to the Ice Age some 10,000 years ago. Some of the featured lakes are reservoirs. They were used years ago as a source of water for driving waterwheels and machinery in the slate and metal mining industries. However, this does not detract from their beauty. For example Llyn Wrysgan in the Moelwynion situated in a very fine position has much of interest around it, not least the remains of the slate mining industry of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
