Adolygiad y Cyhoeddwr / Publisher Review
Shortlisted for Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2015, and winner of the Tir na n-Og 2015 Award, Cowgirl is the heart-warming story of an unlikely friendship – and some gloriously unlikely events. It’s funny, touching, and a thoroughly good read. Thirteen-year-old Gemma and her younger brother Darren live with their mother on the run-down Bryn Mawr estate in south Wales. Their father is in prison (‘like the plank he is’) ‘for petty larceny and fraud, which is a posh way of saying stealing and cheating’, so their mother is providing for the family on her own, with the help of Gran. Life is tough, and Gemma’s favourite escape is to take off on her bicycle. But one day she’s screaming down a steep hill on her bike, her eyes squeezed shut against the wind, when she hears a ‘moo’. Too late, she opens her eyes and slams on the brakes to avoid hurtling into a herd of cows in the middle of the road. Kate the Cowgirl picks Gemma up and dusts her off, and so begins a friendship that will change the lives not only of the two girls, but also of their families and all the residents of Bryn Mawr. The long and short of it – and there’s plenty of story in between – is that the cows go on a clandestine holiday on the estate, each of them camped out in somebody’s backyard. Sharing the secret and the task of keeping the cows safe and well-fed draws all manner of people together: Gemma’s irrepressible Gran, who was once a land girl and teaches everyone how to milk the cows and make butter and cheese, lonely old Morris who proves to be an expert at building cow shelters, Mr Banerjee and his drop-dead-gorgeous grandson, even the terrible Tobin boys. What Gemma says of the plan to hide the cows is just as true of the book: ‘mad, really – mad but brilliant’.
