The Crimean War of 1854-56 was the first of the 'modern' wars. This book is based upon the correspondence of Lieutenant William Allan, a young Scottish officer serving with the 41st (The Welch) Regiment throughout the campaign. An interesting and valuable appendix to this book is a definitive list of all the men who served in the Crimean campaign with the 41st Regiment.

Allan served throughout the Crimea campaign as a Lieutenant and then a Captain of the 41st Regiment and took part in all the major battles, the siege and the assaults on the Redan. His letters home to his family have been edited to remove most of the family content and what remains is a clear and descriptive account of the life and duties of a junior officer during the campaign. He went on to become Colonel of the regiment and a Major-General. The current editor has added text to give a wider picture of events not fully explained by Allan and has also supplemented Allan’s account with quotes from other officer’s letters in particular, Captain Hugh Rowlands VC of the same regiment. Photographs from the original work have been re-used but some have not reproduced very well; to these have been added a few other photographs from different sources, mostly from the Royal Welsh Museum, Brecon. The extensive notes giving short biographies of individuals mentioned in the letters etc take up thirty-four pages, and there is the welcome addition of an appendix with a nominal roll of the regiment from September 1854 to March 1856. A chapter on the history of the Allan family of Edinburgh is also included. Altogether a fascinating account which once again brings home the suffering of the soldiers and the high casualty rate suffered by the officers. This is virtually a regimental history of the 41st in the Crimea and should be on every Crimean historian’s book-shelf. Highly recommended.
