Trawsfynydd is an area steeped in Welsh heritage and culture. But that meant nothing to the war machine that emptied the heathland of its farmers and used it for artillery firing practice, a prisoner of war camp and other purposes that were 'necessary' for the British Empire. Hearing the big guns firing here gave Hedd Wyn his first taste of the war at his home in the nearby Prysor Valley. This became the subject of an article by Dyfnallt: "That night when I recounted the story of the destruction in Traws, there was a wild look in Hedd Wyn's eyes; and nobody was more outspoken against the abhorrent profanity that prostituted the vale than he was." In the early 1950s, there were protests by Plaid Cymru against extendingthe firing range with none other than Gwynfor Evans leading by using Gandhi's non-violent approach to opposing the regime. Again, there is so much we do not know about the history of the camp. In this book, the full history, the local response and a special collection of historical and contemporary images see the light of day for the first time.
