Mae'r gyfrol hon yn cyflwyno canlyniadau prosiect llwyddiannus i ddarganfod dyddiad a chyd-destun cymdeithasol rhai o dai cynharaf Eryri. Mae'r prosiect partneriaeth rhwng y Grwp Dyddio Hen Dai Cymreig a'r Comisiwn wedi tynnu i mewn lawer o berchnogion tai a rhyw 200 o ardalwyr mewn ymarfer uchelgeisiol mewn archeoleg gymunedol.

Disgrifiad Saesneg / English Description

This book presents the results of a successful project to establish the date and social context of some of the earliest houses in Snowdonia. This partnership project between the Dating Old Welsh Houses Group and the RCAHM involved many householders and about 200 local people in an ambitious exercise in community archaeology.

Bu Margaret Dunn FSA gynt yn Gyfarwyddwr Plas Tan y Bwlch, Canolfan Preswyl Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri. Bu’n un o aelodau sylfaenol y Grŵp Dyddio Hen Dai Cymreig ac yn Gyfarwyddwr Prosiect Dendrocronoleg Gogledd-orllewin Cymru. Richard Suggett FSA, FLSW, yw Uwch Ymchwilydd (Adeiladau Hanesyddol), Comisiwn Brenhinol Henebion Cymru. Mae ei gyfraniadau i gyhoeddiadau’r Comisiwn Brenhinol ynghylch tai yn cynnwys, Houses and History in the March of Wales: Radnorshire 1400–1800 (2005), a (chyda Greg Stevenson) Cyflwyno Cartrefi Cefn Gwlad Cymru – Introducing Houses of the Welsh Countryside (2010).

Margaret Dunn FSA was formerly Director of Plas Tan y Bwlch, the Snowdonia National Park Residential Centre. She was a founder member of the Dating Old Welsh Houses Group and director of the North-west Wales Dendrochronology Project. Richard Suggett FSA, FLSW, is Senior Investigator (Historic Buildings) at the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales. His contributions to Royal Commission publications on houses include Houses and History in the March of Wales: Radnorshire 1400–1800 (2005), and (with Greg Stevenson) Cyflwyno Cartrefi Cefn Gwlad Cymru – Introducing Houses of the Welsh Countryside (2010).

Discovering the Historic Houses of Snowdonia presents the results of a successful project to establish the date and social context of some of the earliest houses in Snowdonia. This partnership project between the Dating Old Welsh Houses Group and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales involved many householders and about 200 local people in an ambitious exercise in community archaeology. The project has dated houses using the scientific technique of tree-ring dating, which can be accurate to the year and even the season of felling. The book presents the revealing, and often surprising, results of the project along with many photographs and plans. There are some twenty-five ‘house histories’, researched by members of the Group, including studies of medieval houses with open halls, innovative storeyed houses, and mature complexes. The housing culture of Snowdonia is shown here to be innovative and complex rather than simple and derivative. In sixteenth-century Snowdonia people chose to build for the future, and the older houses of north-west Wales display social ambition as well as the value placed on craftsmanship.
