Dead White opens under nightfall and thickening snow. Schoolmistress Della Arthur, our warm but resilient protagonist, arrives in the freezing winter of 1947 and is forced to take shelter in an unknown farmhouse on the edge of her new village. Finding its inhabitants dead, Della stands at the very edge of a bigger sinister web which, as the novel unravels, reveals its true complexity – hidden in an otherwise ordinary rural community. Gwen Parrott transports her reader from the very first page to a post-war Pembrokeshire buried in winter and secrecy. Most characters seem relatively innocent from the offset, and most remain that way. The mystery unfolding before the attentive Della is privy to only a small portion of the village, meaning that as each thread is followed, she and her occasional companions become snowed in by increasing lies and secrecy. Parrott ties the action to the surroundings aptly, and though the snow soon melts, the clues Della finds herself following only accumulate. Because of the detail in Gwen Parrott’s prose, every move made by Della is easily pictured, and this makes following the action light work. Though certain sentences and pieces of description are a little tentative at first – with the occasional stumble – it’s not long before Dead White finds its rhythm. It is a novel which finds confidence as it continues, building momentum and intrigue with each added piece of the puzzle. Before long, the pace is brilliantly kept and the reader will have difficulty stopping between chapters. The reader is given close access to our protagonist.
