Born in the Rhymney Valley of south Wales, Alun Isaac was educated at Lewis School, Pengam and Cardiff University where he graduated with an Honours Degree in Mining Engineering. Following 10 years in production management at a number of mines in the South Wales Coalfield, he returned to Cardiff University as an member of academic staff. Dr Isaac later became a Reader and led a research group involved with mine support system design at mines in south Wales and South Africa. In conjunction with The National Trust for Wales, Dr Isaac's mining background enabled him to direct and supervise the restoration of the Dolaucothi Gold Mine throughout the 21 year period of Cardiff University involvement. His aim in publishing this book was to pay tribute to colleagues and the many generations of students who voluntarily contributed to bringing Dolaucothi back to life.

APECS Press was established in 1999 dedicated to publishing books about Wales and the Welsh dimension. Its authors are Welsh or write about Welsh subjects. The initial literary activity was based on the traditional folktales of Wales, developed to interest a modern international audience that comprises readers of all ages. This continues to be an important focus, in concert with writing extended to cover a wider range of subjects.
