Shoo Rayner began his career as an illustrator in a garden shed near Machynlleth. He drew for Michael Morpurgo and Rose Impey, but editors kept encouraging him to write. Many years, and over 175 books later, Shoo, well known for his many fast-paced series for newly confident readers, has been building a worldwide following for his award winning how-to-draw videos on YouTube. Shoo lives in the Forest of Dean with his wife and three cats.

This is the third in Shoo Rayner's series about the adventures of Harri and his friend, the red dragon called Tân. The story begins, necessarily, with some recapping of previous events so that new readers can quickly grasp the thread. The creation of a real dragon from an original drawing has led to many complications in Harri's home town of St Gertrude's, especially since Mr Mitchell, his friend Ryan's dad, has succeeded in creating a rival and deadly white dragon. The dragons are a tourist attraction and are kept confined in the castle. Now, though, Mr Mitchell has let his dragon escape, in the greedy expectation that it will lead him to treasure. In the meantime, Harri has grown ever more fond of Tân and has discovered that they can communicate secretly. When the police begin to interview him about the creation of the dragons, Harri realises that he will have to accompany Tân to Merlin's Cave and that the legendary battle of the red and white dragons will have to be re-enacted. With the help of his mother's friend, Imelda, a white witch, he reaches the site of the battle before the police arrive and a thrilling encounter takes place. The story is told at a good pace and has a light touch with the unlikely combination of a modern setting, with mobile phones and helicopters, and the fabulous elements. It should appeal both to fans of the earlier stories and to other children who are becoming confident independent readers.
