What is a dragonstone? It is the distillation of strength and wisdom. The call to seek it is heard by Rosetta, who is in great need of it. Returned to her ancestral home in Wales, she activates ancient magic. A falconer with whom she apprentices and her Grandmother's knowledge of Celtic lore aid her in finding objects hidden long ago. Animal spirit-guides initiate Rosetta into an invisible world.

Rosetta turns fourteen when her family returns to her mother's ancestral Welsh home. The manor house, built in the time of the Tudors, has fallen into disrepair since Rosetta’s grandmother settled into a cottage in nearby Merthyr Tydfil. The day she moved she took Rosetta, then a small child, to see a hidden backwall. “This, my dear child, is your heritage of old,” she said, pointing at carved figures obscured by thick vegetation. A stone dragon towering at the top filled Rosetta with fear, but Grandma explained that he was protecting a treasure, and she should not be afraid. Rosetta seeks out the manor's backwall when the father, unable to find work, becomes abusive. She removes a piece of carving, and ancient powers awaken. A search is activated. An apprenticeship to a falconer, combined with Grandma's knowledge of Celtic lore, support Rosetta on her four-year heroine's journey. She becomes skillful at caring for falcons, even training a chick she helps survive. At the same time, initiation experiences in the dream world develop inner strengths she puts to use in her real life. As she finds magical objects hidden centuries ago, she begins to "see" with other-worldly eyes and receives help from spirit-animal guides. Ultimately offering up her discovered treasures for wisdom, Rosetta gains the strength to deal with her father's violence with compassion and understanding.
