Hooray, private detective Louie Knight and his once-erstwhile, now-steadfast assistant Calamity Jane are back. But this time they are superseding the paradigm. (I’m not entirely sure what that means, but it sounds good and they keep talking about it.) Anyway, Uncle Vanya has made the long journey from the Welsh-Ukrainian town of Hughesovka to Aberystwyth in search of the spirit child who possessed his beloved daughter Ninotchka. Louie agrees to take on this strangest of cases. His fee? One of Yuri Gagarin’s socks. And so the fun begins, with the usual cast of cronies being accompanied by – among others - trolls, vampires, snuff philatelists, a deranged spinning-wheel salesman, a Witchfinder who’s into bondage, and God. Yes, indeed, God turns up at the Pier to have a chat with Louie about the making of the universe, which was a losing entry in a competition. The action takes us into the Welsh hinterlands and across eastern Europe to Hughesovka, with a stop-over with Count Vlad in Transylvania. But it is the familiar streets of Aberystwyth that come most to life, a glowing constant that root this and all the other Louie Knight tales in a recognisable reality. Once again, Pryce delivers all the clever, crazy, cultish stuff we’ve come to expect of him. All the old tongue-in-cheek charm is here, but with fewer laughs and a bleaker tone. Perhaps that’s what superseding the paradigm is all about.
