How grand a dream was it? It started off with people in Bristol wanting a railway to London 190km (120 miles) away for carrying goods quickly between these two cities. Many things had to happen before they could get their railway. One of them was finding someone to build it. They chose Isambard Kingdom Brunel. He was already famous for his bridges and tunnels. Since the route for the railway would need these, he seemed the ideal choice. He then made the dream a bigger one. His dream was also to carry passengers, not just between London and Bristol, but to New York in the USA by ship. On top of that, their train travel was to be in even more luxury than on any other railway in Britain. Part of this luxury would be a much smoother ride for the passengers. Brunel came up with a way to get this. He made the track much wider. It became known as ‘broad gauge’. It was the best ever railway, and was called the ‘Great Western Railway’ (GWR). Brunel died when he was just 53 years old. Soon after, his broad gauge track, locomotives and carriages were scrapped and normal trains started running on normal tracks. Knowing that would have killed him.
