For years people argued over what sort of locomotives to use. There were some who wanted to carry on with small, boring locomotives that would need help for climbing hills. Then some who were looking at Nigel Gresley's powerful and attractive 'Pacifics' and thinking they should have the same. But they had no-one who could design one like it.

This is a story about a railway that couldn’t make up its mind. For years they argued over what sort of locomotives to use. There were those who wanted to carry on in their old ways with small, boring locomotives that would need help from one or two others for climbing hills. Then there were those who were looking at the other side of Britain and seeing Nigel Gresley’s powerful and attractive ‘Pacifics’ and thinking they should have the same. The trouble was they had no-one who could design one like it. The boss of the railway came to the rescue by inviting a designer from the Great Western Railway (GWR) to be his chief engineer. The GWR were the leaders at the time. It showed in the ‘class’ of locomotive that he designed for the railway. Full of pride, they called it the ‘Princess Royal’. This was followed a few years later by Britain’s most powerful, but not the fastest, locomotive. They gave it an even more royal name. It was the ‘Coronation’. The railway named the express service it pulled ‘Coronation Scot’. This became famous, especially when the railway tried following the craze for streamlining the locomotives. It looked good, but more trouble than it was worth. They soon stripped it off.
