It was madness. From the beginning of railways there had been competition between trains running on the east of Britain & those on the west. Both were trying to beat each other from London to Edinburgh. In August 1888, it developed into out-and-out races fuelled by papers eager to come up with gripping stories in the summer lull. The country became hooked.

It was madness. From the beginning of main line passenger railways there had been fierce competition between trains running on the east side of Britain and those on the west side. Both were trying to beat each other from London to Edinburgh. Briefly in August 1888, it developed into out-and-out races fuelled by newspapers eager to come up with gripping stories in the summer lull. The whole country became hooked. Then came the dirty tricks, as one railway firm tried to steal an edge over the other. They briefly lost sight of their purpose as the madness took hold. Passengers suffered and had their lives put at risk as trains were driven faster than was safe. Sanity was soon restored. Then in 1895, they did it all over again. This time it was to Aberdeen, except Aberdeen station wasn’t the target, it was a lonely outpost nobody had heard of. This gave the west coast railway plenty of scope for playing more dirty tricks on their rival. Finally came the fatal crash as a speeding train came off the rails at Preston. That was it. There was never any more racing.
