From the outset of this pacy novel, startling reality and flights of fancy are neatly bound together. “When a hole in the earth opened up and swallowed my mum, everything changed”. Griffin Tudor, our narrator, is a boy who loves maths and maps. Yes really; don’t let this put you off. It will come in very handy later in the story. Griff lives with his mother, Morwenna Tudor, in Pembrokeshire, where their neatly ordered, perhaps rather fastidious life, is consumed literally when their bungalow disappears into a mysterious sink hole. With his mother fighting for her life, Griff is forced to seek shelter with his estranged Uncle Rhodri, Aunt Opal and cousin Cinnamon. Conflict immediately ensues as Griff struggles to adjust to a very relaxed earthy existence in a dilapidated former workhouse, The Spike, with mysterious noises in dark passages and equally scary encounters with Cinnamon and her red-eyed rat, Ruby Ruby, not to mention the worms. Rhodri’s friends, Blyth and Pythagoras Pugh, ensure that Griff’s stay will be an eventful one, culminating in a nail-biting showdown with the very unappealing villain. At the heart of the novel is the mysterious Aztec dagger, the Jewelled Jaguar “like a green fire”, found by Morwenna while diving in her youth, a dagger which is bound to Griff’s very survival. Old and beautiful, it can be seen as a force for both good and evil to those who come under its influence. It is the winning combination of vivid language and humour, both in dramatic moments and the characters’ interactions, which will keep young readers engaged here. At its heart, it is a really good yarn with perhaps some unlikely coincidences but most readers will forgive these wholeheartedly. Ultimately, forgiveness and reconciliation are the overwhelming forces at the heart of the story. Griff’s efforts to do the right thing while being true to himself will resonate with readers as well as his trials with his unconventional family. Love can be found in unexpected places; just ask Cinnamon and her rat.
