‘A library of memories’ is how Kyffin Williams describes his inspiration and the source of his images, and every library – personal, school and public – should have copies of this inspiring great-value paperback of paintings and sketches by the most famous and successful living painter from Wales. The carefully selected works, a combination of landscapes, seascapes and human and animal portraits, give a representative picture of Gwynedd country life, both in its majestic starkness, and in its comforting familiarity. Here are all the Williams’s trademarks: the wind-blown shepherds and sunlight on snow, the craggy slate-encrusted hills and the brilliant colours of autumn, set out in an uncluttered format, to appeal to a new young audience of art enthusiasts. The text is simple and accessible to a wide range of readers. It introduces almost incidentally the language of artistic criticism: it is never stilted or in the least bit patronising. Indeed, its secret is that it does not seek to ‘explain’ or analyse the pictures, but rather to enhance the viewer’s experience. And here too are the words of Kyffin Williams himself, juxtaposed but speaking separately of his experiences in the mountains and on the seashore of his beloved countryside. His imagery in words is as crisp and exciting as his paint on the canvas. Two full-page, evocative photographs of the elderly artist, one with his sketchbook on location and one in his hilltop studio, link a real person with his artistry and his literary voice. The publication sensibly includes both a chronological list of the artist’s life and achievements, and further details of the actual paintings and drawings included in the book – useful materials for classroom work on referencing and information texts. A list of collections held in galleries and museums across Wales will, I feel sure, encourage people to see the ‘real thing’. If not, this selection gives a wonderful insight into the life and work of a painter who claims to have been lucky to have been born into such a land, and who has captured through his life's work a personal cynefin , a private and public landscape where ‘All my past is painting, and not only my past, but the past of my ancestors too’.
