Those who know and love Gregynog as much as I do will enjoy this publication. I hesitate to call it a book, for the text runs to a mere 42 pages. The late Eirene White was an important figure in her lifetime and was the daughter of Thomas Jones who, apart from a number of other things, was Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet. Here she describes how Gregynog, in the old county of Montgomeryshire, became an incomparable centre for the arts in Wales. Not surprisingly, she emphasises the major role of the ladies of the title, Gwendolin and Margaret Davies, the sisters behind the creation. They were the grand-daughters of the tycoon David Davies who became extremely wealthy through his interests in mining and the establishment of the docks of south Wales. When the sisters eventually inherited the riches left by their grandfather, they purchased Gregynog; and the rest, as they say, is history. Here music flourished, attracting regular visitors such as Holst and Elgar, while literary figures also gravitated to this rural paradise – Bernard Shaw and many of the Georgian poets included. Gregynog also set up its own press, which continues to produce superb, if expensive, volumes. Anyone who is inspired by Eirene White to read a more detailed volume on the sisters and the house might like to consider Thing of Beauty , a magnificently designed book which was published by the National Museum in 2007.
