The Nightmare Gift by Graham Howells is a whimsical tale that serves as a charming introduction to Welsh folklore. Aled worries about everything and now he has to start a new school, he’s terrified. As if his odd new teacher Miss Ceridwen and the big ginger-haired school bully aren’t enough to contend with, he finds himself in the company of a horrifying and hairy yellow-eyed Bwci Bo. The shape-shifting Bwci Bo and a whole host of strange characters lead Aled on a Hallowe'en adventure he’ll never forget. This story explores themes of self-belief, bravery, belonging and friendship, whilst introducing the reader to colourful characters from Welsh legends. Miss Ceridwen, with flowers in her hair and piercing blue eyes, is delightfully mysterious and ethereal, and the toothless and wrinkled Mallt is a wonderfully unhinged old crone. But it is the Bwci Bo who steals the show and ultimately captures the heart. It spends most of the story as an ugly, scruffy mutt of a dog, which Aled’s Mam-gu falls instantly in love with, and as a hairy little dragon, but changes into many different forms, from a spoon to a horrifically huge and spiky monster. Children will love him! This is the perfect book for young readers about to make the move into longer, chapter books; the story is simple and the characters are immensely likeable. Graham Howells’ glorious illustrations are one of the strengths of the book. Bold and detailed, readers will be thoroughly engaged by them. If you’re looking for a book to build the reading stamina of young readers, look no further.
