The faded elegance of Cornerstones has long been home to the occasionally mischievous spirit of a Victorian ragamuffin known simply as 'Nobody'. Now Peter Sinclair, his wife Jane and their two children, Tom and Gilly, arrive there with the aim of setting up an antiques business. For years, Nobody has succeeded in frightening all-comers away from the rambling old house, but that's about to change.

Nobody lives in Cornerstones House. He can’t remember his name, but his earliest memories are of growing up in Cornerstones House when it was a damp, cold workhouse. When sickness came to the workhouse, poor Nobody died and became a ghost. Other ghosts came and went throughout the years, just passing through, but only Nobody stayed. Over many years, Nobody watched as people moved in to Cornerstones House, a house which he now considered to be his home, and soon, with powers that came through sadness and sometimes anger, Nobody was able to move objects and throw them around. This was how he learned to keep Cornerstones House to himself. No sooner had new owners moved in that Nobody used his tricks to frighten them away, until eventually Cornerstones House gained a reputation for being haunted and it ran into disrepair. When the Sinclairs buy Cornerstones House and move in, despite his best efforts to frighten them away, Nobody eventually finds friendship with brother and sister, Tom and Gilly. With Nobody’s help, Tom and Gilly meet other ghosts that visit Cornerstones House, such as Lance Corporal Wilson, who always arrives on Armistice Day, seeking out his wife Victoria, and Milicent the cook, who claims the kitchen as her own despite having died over two hundred years before. The only ghost that Nobody tries to avoid is Jack Treadful. When he was alive, he was a mean, cruel man who forced the children at Cornerstones House to steal and pickpocket for him. Nobody is frightened of Jack Treadful, and when he arrives one day and sees Tom and Gilly, he decides to stay. Together Nobody, Tom and Gilly must find a way to get rid of Jack Treadful for good before he does something unimaginable! Baz Greenwood has written a book about friendship, kindness and resilience tied up in a mysterious and often scary ghost story for children. A delightful read with the possibility of more adventures for Nobody, Tom and Gilly to come.
