Peter Lord writes and broadcasts about the visual culture of Wales in both Welsh and English languages. In 1994 he was a visiting scholar at the Yale Center for British Art in the United States, and between 1996 and 2003 he led a research project for the University of Wales which resulted in the three-volume history The Visual Culture of Wales. More recent publications include an autobiography, Relationships with Pictures (2013) and The Art of Music: Branding the Welsh Nation, co-written with Dr Rhian Davies (2022). He has curated large-scale exhibitions for Welsh institutions including the National Library of Wales, where ‘No Welsh Art: Exploring the Myth’, was shown in 2024–2025. The exhibition presented to the public many of the images discussed in The Tradition: A New History of Welsh Art (2016), his single-volume introduction to Welsh visual culture.

Two linked essays concern the work of marginalised women writers and artists – the novelist and film critic Edith Nepean, and the first women-only artists’ group in the country. Two further related essays examine how high-art images became a part of popular culture, transmitted as prints that deeply influenced perceptions of nationality within Wales and beyond. Developing this theme, the influence of Wales’ most celebrated twentieth-century painter, Kyffin Williams, is analysed in terms of the unique status that he achieved in his own lifetime. By contrast, the work of the 18th-century Welsh painter William Parry, largely unknown to the general public, is introduced through a deep analysis of the social and political context in which he created a single portrait.
