Jill Young, 1928-2012, was an accomplished painter and sculptor trained at Wimbledon Art School in 1940s. Her style was traditional and figurative with a strong empathy for her subjects of flowers, landscape and religious paintings; rural life is a predominant interest in her work. She was an inspirational and perceptive teacher and taught for several years following completion of her Art Teacher’s Diploma (ATD), London University. She attained a prodigious quantity of work during her career, culminating in the Pembrokeshire Standing Stones project in the 1980s. In retirement, her facility for mural painting and trompe l'oeil were realized in the work undertaken on her historic home: Bryn-y-môr House, Cardigan, where both conservation skills and an acknowledged talent for garden design were added to her achievements.

Jill Young was an artist trained in the academic traditions that were still current when she enrolled at Wimbledon School of Art in the 1940s. She specialised in landscapes and flower pieces in the Dutch tradition. After spending many years as a farmer's wife and mother in Gloucestershire, she moved to West Wales, where, like Graham Sutherland before her, she felt a strong affinity with the Pembrokeshire landscape. This inspired her to carry out a remarkable painting project. She tracked down 53 sites where standing stones of unknown age but possibly of great antiquity are found, sometimes built into field gateways with their origins forgotten, but all still contributing to the numinous sense of each place. The result was a series of small, powerful naturalistic paintings, comparable to the work that might have been done by a Picturesque traveller in the Regency period, filled with delicate observation of skies, vegetation, and the colours and textures of the stones themselves. The paintings were only exhibited for the first time at the end of Jill's life, to wide acclamation. She was anxious that the set should be kept together, and her wish was fulfilled when they were bought by the National Library of Wales.
