Many of O’Sullivan’s poems are reminiscences on a working-class upbringing in Birmingham, seamed with aspects of Irish ancestry. His eye for everyday details, including brand names of comestibles, recalls the social document of Richard Hoggart, Iain Sinclair, and David Kynaston. O’Sullivan’s verse is conversational yet rhythmic and cadent, descriptively rich, coloured with colloquialisms and glowing with nostalgia.
