My People Cafodd y casgliad hwn o straen byrion ei gyhoeddi gyntaf yn 1915. Pentref dychmygol Manteg yng ngorllewin Cymru yw'r llwyfan i ddigwyddiadau'r straeon. Mae'r straeon yn ymdrin â gormes anghydffurfiaeth. Ymysg y cymeriadau ym Mhanteg y mae dynion rhwysgfawr, rhagrithiol, hunangyfiawn y seiat, a'r trueiniaid sydd yn ofn y Bod Mawr ond yn pechu yn gïaidd yn erbyn ei gilydd er lles eu heneidiau a'u pocedi. Perodd My People ddrwgdeimlad ac atgasedd tuag at yr awdur pan gafodd ei gyhoeddi. Yn y Western Mail fe'i condemniwyd yn hallt: '[he has] raked in the garbage of the countryside for his characters', a'i alw yn 'literature of the sewer'. Un o nodweddion My People yw ei ieithwedd arbennig iawn. Cyfieithiad llythrennol o iaith ffurfiol y Beibl ydyw ar adegau, ac o iaith cefn gwlad bryd arall. Mae'r canlyniad yn barodi didrugaredd, ffughynafol o'r Gymraeg. Eto i gyd, mae'r difrifwch sydd yn perthyn i'r ieithwedd unigryw hon yn gweddu i straeon sydd yn trafod treisio merched, llosgach, mwrdwr, camdrin plant a hen bobl, a gwallgofrwydd. Yn y stori 'A Father in Sion', er enghraifft, mae gwr yn dweud y drefn wrth ei ferch: 'Weep you not, Rachel. It is not for us to question the all-wise ways of the Big Man' (51). Yn 'The Woman Who Sowed Iniquity' dyma ddyn cefnog yn hel ei chwaer o'i bwythyn: 'Go you down to Lancoch now, and take an old ladder with you and climb to the roof, and remove the tiles one by one' (101). Yn 'Lamentations', mae menyw yn cael ei gyrru i'r madws: '...one end of the rope he fastened round her right wrist and one end round the left wrist. In this wise he drove her before him, in the manner in which a colt is driven, to the madhouse of the three shires...' (144). Yn 'Be This Her Memorial', mae hen wreigan yn byw ar gig llygod Ffrengig i grynhoi arian er mwyn prynu Beibl drud yn anrheg i'r pregethwr. Pan mae'n marw, daw'r llygod i gnoi'i chnawd: 'The minister, startled and horrified, fled from the house of sacrifice' (112). Mae straeon Caradoc Evans yn cael eu hadrodd mewn modd uniongyrchol a diarddurn sydd yn dwyn damhegion y Testament Newydd i gof. My People My People is a collection of short stories in English by Caradoc Evans which was first published in 1915. The stories are set in the fictitious village of Manteg in Ceredigion, west Wales. The book depicts the religious life of the rural, Welsh-speaking community. The characters who people the book include a small group of pompous, hypocritical and self- righteous chapel elders, and on the other, the vulgar peasantry who quake for fear of God and commit ruthless acts to better their own lives. When published, My People provoked uproar in Wales. The Western Mail accused Evans of having 'raked in the garbage of the countryside for his characters', and denigrated it as 'the literature of the sewer'. The stories are written in a language which draws on Welsh speech, on the Bible, and on the author's gift for parody. The resulting idiom is, at times, pseudo-archaic, ridiculous and disarming, but retains a note of solemnity appropriate in tales of rape, incest, murder and mental illness. In 'A Father in Sion', a man educates his daughter 'Weep you not, Rachel. It is not for us to question the all-wise ways of the Big Man' (51). In 'The Woman Who Sowed Iniquity' brother evicts sister: 'Go you down to Lancoch now, and take an old ladder with you and climb to the roof, and remove the tiles one by one' (101). In 'Lamentations', a woman is driven to the madhouse: '...one end of the rope he fastened round her right wrist and one end round the left wrist. In this wise he drove her before him, in the manner in which a colt is driven, to the madhouse of the three shires...' (144). In 'Be This Her Memorial', an old woman, having spent a sovereign on a Bible, is reduced to eating rat meat: 'The minister, startled and horrified, fled from the house of sacrifice' (112). Caradoc Evans' stories are told simply in a way which echoes the parables of the New Testament. In 1916 he published Capel Sion , a second collection of stories in a similar vein.
