Here are twenty routes to explore the fantastic countryside and heritage of the Brecon Beacons National Park. You don't need to walk far to find hidden woodland dells, astounding views or remarkable historic remains. All twenty walks are 'mini-adventures' discovering the amazing variety of this majestic national park.

The Park stretches for 50 miles from east to west. In the west, the Black Mountains present a dramatic high escarpment along the English border straddled by Offa's Dyke long distance path. A succession of deep, wooded valleys dissects the mountain range, bringing fast flowing streams from the waterlogged moorland to the Usk and Wye river systems. Monks and farmers have shared these lands, their legacy most notably seen at the haunting remains of Llanthony Priory in the Honddu Valley. In the centre of the Park lie the highest peaks of the region, the loftiest, Pen y Fan, only just failing to make the 'Munro' height of 3000 feet. The characteristic sandstone caps of the summits bring an iconic profile to the ridge south of Brecon. To the west lie the lonely, exposed uplands of Fforest Fawr and the Black Mountain. Bannau Brycheinog and Bannau Sir Gaer combine to draw a dramatic and distinctive skyline above the source of the Usk. While in the south, the limestone underbelly of the Park is exposed to create a fascinating landscape of woodland and waterfalls, caves and caverns. There are many nooks and crannies to explore throughout the National Park. This series of walks explores many of these. Some use waymarked trails, others combine picturesque paths or open moorland. All are easy to follow. Although these are short walks, there is no shortage of excitement, challenge and variety.
