I wasn’t sure about this book at first: mythical characters trying to relive their stories through modern day teenagers, but it turned out to be a very good tale. The whole story is about stories, how they change, how we continue to live them long after they’ve ended, and how some stories have surprising twists and turns. The novel is set slightly in the future, and begins on the night of a huge storm that hits the whole of Britain. Our focus is on the west coast of Wales, specifically Borth, which has, in real life, recently seen its fair share of weather damage. For those who live nearby, this story thread is evocative and quite alarming. Borth is practically washed away, and our main character, Tomos, a privileged young man, has to find a new way to live when order breaks down. His actions result in him being arrested and tried for murder – not a spoiler! We find this out very early on in the story. Possibly the weakest part of the novel is how quickly people resort to extreme violence in 2029. The stakes are ratcheted up, I feel, higher than they need to go. The storm and the manipulation by the mythical characters should be sufficient. Nonetheless, it’s a page-turner.
