As with others of Dan Anthony’s books, this is an engaging mash-up of more than one genre. It begins as a novel about a girl who likes animals, then moves on to a mystery story when a dog she has found injured is snatched away from the vet’s. Soon enough, it becomes a spy novel, with the arrival of a Russian submarine. This is quickly followed by a hybrid of maths and magic that must remain unspeakable. The book’s strength lies in the fact that it keeps you guessing. Its weakness lies in the fact that the plot is so complex, there is really very little time for the development of characters or relationships. Caitlin, the central character, despite living with her parents, has almost no emotional engagement with them. Caitlin is in junior school, so I imagine that is the target audience Anthony is aiming at. However, the convoluted plot and lack of emotional payoff might not appeal to them. And the final explanation will leave many flummoxed! Overall, a light-hearted book.
