These are five original tales by Margaret Isaac drawn from her research into Welsh legend and culture, especially that surrounding the Dolaucothi Gold Mine near Lampeter in South Wales. She examines the attraction that gold has had from ancient times, and the greed and gullibility it ignites in a range of characters from shepherds, cattle drovers and naughty boys to mythical knights and fairy folk. Even Merlin is anxious to discover the Philosopher’s Stone that is believed to turn all metal into gold. The tales are written in a lively style, focusing on the action above the theme, and bringing the fantastic to vivid life. The stories are best read aloud as the vocabulary used is quite challenging. However, the generous line drawings and decorative borders are bold and appealing.
