Alwyn E. Annels was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire and studied Geology at King's College, London, and then at Imperial College for his Doctorate. He then worked in the Zambian mining industry for six years from 1967 until his appointment as Lecturer in Exploitation and Mining Geology in the Department of Mineral Exploitation, Cardiff University. Whilst at Cardiff, he developed an MSc course in Mineral Resource Evaluation, wrote books on this subject and was heavily involved in the rehabilitation and development of the Dolaucothi Gold Mines as a student field centre. Since his retirement from the University in 2000, he has acted as a Consultant Mining Geologist on mining projects throughout the world. Barry C. Burnham was brought up in north-east England and read Classics and Archaeology at St John's College, Cambridge, before gaining a PhD on the 'Small Towns of Roman Britain'. His academic career has been spent in south-west Wales at the University of Wales, Lampeter (now part of the University of Wales, Trinity St David's) where he became a Professor of Archaeology in 2006. While there, he undertook a series of surveys and excavations at the Dolaucothi Gold Mines. His publications include works on Romano-British 'Small Towns', the Mines at Dolaucothi-Pumsaint and a co-edited volume on the 'Roman Frontiers of Wales and the Marches'. Now an Emeritus Professor, he is about to take over the Editorship of 'Britannia', the national journal for Romano-British Studies.

This new revised edition of a book first published in 1983 and republished twice since in 1986 and 1995, has been written by two specialists in the fields of Geology and Archaeology respectively. Alwyn E. Annels and Barry C. Burnham, who were closely involved with activities at the gold mines and in the vicinity, have provided information that will assist a better understanding of the gold deposits and history of mining at Dolaucothi for those visiting the site or for others who have an interest in industrial archaeology, gold deposits or mining in general. APECS Press commenced as an independent publishing company in 1999/2000 with the stated aim of publishing books on Wales and Welsh matters. The latest books on the Dolaucothi Gold Mines continue this policy that started with the series of books on Welsh folklore, the first being entitled Tales of Gold that described the myths and legends in the area of Dinefwr and Pumsaint. In July 2012, APECS Press published the first of two books on the most recent activity at the Dolaucothi Gold mines, Pumsaint, Carmarthenshire. Entitled Dolaucothi Gold - A Vision Realised , the restoration of parts of the mines to serve as a mining field centre was described in a 200 page, well-illustrated volume. The initiative of the University of Wales Colleges at Cardiff and Lampeter, in association with the National Trust for Wales, has subsequently seen the Gold Mines site developing into a centre for lifelong learning, industrial conservation and tourism.
