Emilio and Gabby both go on journeys to meet the Doge of Justino in his palace to ask him to right the wrongs in their little Italian town. Emilio is aided by a magical lantern, the Kalends, Gabby can call upon the help of a phoenix, a miraculous fire-bird. But the young Doge is under threat and his eighteenth birthday turns into one of danger, mayhem and magic.
