Dr D. Ben Rees has been involved in politics since his schooldays and has become a biographer, in both Welsh and English, of outstanding Welsh Labour leaders. His thirteen volumes - written in Welsh and English - on figures such as Bessie Braddock, Henry Richard, Mahatma Gandhi, James Griffiths, Aneurin Bevan, Cledwyn Hughes, William Abraham (Mabon), and Gwilym Prys-Davies have been widely praised and reviewed. In 2024, his Welsh-language history of the Welsh Labour Party, Cyd-ddyheu a'i Cododd Hi: Hanes y Blaid Lafur yng Nghymru, was published and received high praise from the First Minister of the Senedd, Eluned Morgan.

By the 1920s, they had made their breakthrough and were given the opportunity to govern at Westminster. It was only after the costly Second World War that Labour secured a substantial majority, enabling the creation of the Welfare State and the founding of the NHS. Within the party, the call for devolution was championed by a small group of socialists, and after a long struggle, Labour in 1997 established the National Assembly in Cardiff Bay, a development that changed Wales forever. Since its inception, the Assembly, now known as the Senedd, has been governed with compassion by Labour politicians.
