Adolygiad y Cyhoeddwr / Publisher Review

English review follows Casgliad o eiriau ynghyd â geiriau ag iddynt ystyron tebyg, ystyron perthynol neu ystyron croes yw thesawrws, a dyma’r thesawrws cyntaf yn y Gymraeg. Cyfansoddwyd thesawrws Saesneg enwog Peter Roget yn 1805. Yn wahanol i thesawrws Roget, ni threfnir y Thesawrws Cymraeg yn ôl cysyniadau, ond yn hytrach yn ôl trefn yr wyddor. I’r sawl nad yw’n gyfarwydd â defnyddio thesawrws, mae ynddo ragarweiniad syml sy’n esbonio sut mae gwneud hynny. Mae ynddo hefyd dabl o’r treigladau, a rhestr o enwau lleoedd ac enwau personau. Mae’n debyg mai fel erfyn (offeryn, twlsyn, celficyn, arf) i helpu rhywun i ysgrifennu y bwriedir thesawrws. Pan fydd rhywun yn ansicr ai rhyw air neu’i gilydd yw’r gair priodol, neu pan fydd rhywun am amrywio ei eirfa am resymau arddulliol, gellir troi at thesawrws am gymorth. Yn aml, bydd adnoddau ieithyddol yr unigolyn yn ddigon i’w alluogi i ddewis rhwng y dewisiadau a gynigir, er enghraifft, i dynnu gwahaniaeth rhwng ‘tarten’, ‘pastai’, ‘teisen’, a ‘cacen’, ond weithiau, fel yr awgryma’r rhagymadrodd, bydd angen troi at eiriadur am ddiffiniadau (esboniadau, eglurhadau, darnodiadau) o’r cynigion. Gwahaniaethir rhwng ystyron geiriau drwy ddefnyddio rhifau i wahanu’r prif ystyron (ac weithiau er mwyn gwahaniaethu rhwng rhannau ymadrodd sy’n edrych yr un fath ond sydd mewn gwirionedd yn eiriau hollol wahanol (e.e. yr enw ‘erfyn’ (= offeryn) a’r berfenw ‘erfyn’ (= ymbil)) a defnyddir hanner colon i wahaniaethu rhwng graddfeydd o ystyr. Mae’n drueni nad yw’r cyfystyron bob tro yn digwydd fel dangoseiriau, er enghraifft o dan y gair ‘geiriadur’, rhoddir ‘geirlyfr’, ‘geirfa’, ‘geirgrawn’ a ‘thesawrws’, ond nid oes yr un o’r rhain, gan gynnwys ‘thesawrws’, yn digwydd fel dangosair. Ar ben hynny, nid oes dim i awgrymu bod ‘geirgrawn’ yn air anarferedig bellach. Serch hynny, gallai’r Thesawrws fod yn ddefnyddiol, law yn llaw â geiriadur da, ar gyfer unrhyw un sy’n dymuno estyn ei afael ar Gymraeg ysgrifenedig, boed yn siaradwr rhugl neu ddysgwr profiadol. Richard Crowe * * * A thesaurus is a collection of words with words of similar, related or opposite meanings and this is the first thesaurus in Welsh. Peter Roget’s famous English thesaurus was composed in 1805, but unlike Roget’s thesaurus, the Thesawrws Cymraeg is not arranged conceptually but rather according to alphabetical order. For those not familiar with using a thesaurus, it has a simple introduction which explains how to use it. It also has a table of the mutations, a list of place names and a list of personal names. A thesaurus is probably intended to be used as a tool (instrument, appliance, contraption, contrivance) to help one to write. When one is unsure whether a certain word or other is the appropriate word, or when one wishes to vary one’s vocabulary for stylistic reasons, a thesaurus is there to help. Often an individual’s own linguistic skills will be sufficient for him or her to choose between the options offered, for example, to draw meaningful distinctions between ‘tart’, ‘pie’, ‘cake’, and ‘gateau’, but sometimes, as the introduction suggests, a dictionary will have to be used to check the definitions (explanations, clarifications, denotations) of the options. Words are differentiated from each other by using numbers to differentiate between the main meanings (and sometimes to differentiate between the parts of speech which look exactly the same but which are in fact totally different words (e.g. the noun ‘erfyn’ (= tool) and verbal noun ‘erfyn’ (= implore)) and a semi-colon is used to differentiate between shades of meaning. It is a pity that the synonyms do not themselves always occur as head-words. For example, under the word ‘geiriadur’, the synonyms ‘geirlyfr’, ‘geirfa’, ‘geirgrawn’ and ‘thesawrws’ are given, but none of these, including ‘thesawrws’, occur as head-words. There is also nothing to suggest that ‘geirgrawn’ is an obsolete word. However, the Thesawrws Cymraeg could be a useful tool, used along with a good dictionary, for anyone, fluent speaker or advanced learner, who wishes to broaden his or her grasp of written Welsh.
