Webb recalls in excellent fashion life in the village, covering many aspects, and providing a much-needed history of the valley from 450 AD when the first known occupier, Vortigern – deposed King of Wessex – took refuge there. Eileen, in describing her idyllic childhood, provides a vibrant insight into the challenges, hazards and tragedies that faced a quarryman in extracting stone and the efforts required to ship the stone out by sea to different parts of the world. The readers will find that they are taken back in time, gaining a fuller appreciation of social issues such as health and education in the life of a close-knit community during the 1930s. Today, Nant Gwrtheyrn is a picture postcard village thanks to a mammoth restoration project by the ‘Nant Gwrtheyrn Trust’ and is now accessible by road. Visitors can now take in breathtaking views as they drive down.
