Anyone who has previously encountered Pryce’s unique brand of Welsh comedy noir will be delighted to learn that his new work The Unbearable Lightness of Being in Aberystwyth is a resounding continuation of his classic style. It is steeped in the wonderfully surreal, the narrative revels in its fast-paced plot, and classic characters from previous outings appear in droves. Who can forget the cheery exuberance of Louie’s sidekick, Calamity, or mysterious insights of Sospan, the ice cream man? Fresh faces also abound. Based around Aberystwyth’s premier (and only) private detective agency, the intricate story involves the pursuit of a monkey named Mr Bojangles, the investigation of an ancient burglary and many savage beatings. Pryce creates a believable, at times gruesome and always eccentric twist or seventeen! However, the real beauty of this well-crafted book is the feeling of dark realism behind the amusingly monickered characters and their fanciful situations. Secrets tear away at the shallow exterior. Light comic touches in each character and gritty, heart-stopping moments occur just when you would least expect them. If one criticism could be levelled at this superb novel, once or twice the intrigues were so intricate that I found it rather difficult to follow exactly what was going on, but this may just be down to intelligence issues on my part! Malcolm Pryce is a superb writer, has developed a truly stunning style, and this book is a must for anyone with an obscure sense of humour and love of the dark side.
