So, here’s another little gem to squeeze into the now-bulging glove compartment of my car, though it would be equally at home on the bedside browsing shelf or, for those of you who have one, in the lavatorial library. I’m sure there can be no shortage of books on Welsh place names (the bibliography here lists no fewer than nine, all published between 1994 and 2007, and including the University of Wales Press’s comprehensive and authoritative gazetteer), but this one is stylish, beautifully presented, and clearly produced with a great deal of love and attention. An initial introductory section is followed by lists of place names and their meanings, usefully presented by county and interspersed with glorious photographs and brief explanations of the many geographical, social and cultural features that are reflected in Welsh place names. The author has also included some charming and carefully selected quotations from great writers from Wales and beyond, such as Gerald Manley Hopkins, R. S. Thomas and J. R. R. Tolkien, who said in his O’Donell Lecture of 1955 that, ‘Welsh is of this soil, this island, the senior language of the men of Britain; and Welsh is beautiful’. He is right, of course; Welsh is beautiful, and it also speaks loudly of the country’s heritage and traditions through its place names, recording and recounting in just a word or two stories and realities that remain concealed to anyone ignorant of the language. If you are one of the ignorant, whether visitor, incomer or non-Welsh-speaking Welsh, this is a great little book to have to hand.
