Shoo Rayner began his career as an illustrator in a garden shed near Machynlleth. He drew for Michael Morpurgo and Rose Impey, but editors kept encouraging him to write. Many years, and over 200 books later, Shoo, well known for his many fast-paced series for newly confident readers, has been building a worldwide following for his award winning how-to-draw videos on YouTube. Shoo lives in the Forest of Dean with his wife and two cats.

Walker is a jolly lad who happens to be obsessed with dogs. As his mum is severely allergic, he isn’t allowed to have one at home; also his dad loves the family cat and can’t understand his son’s longing for a different kind of pet. This state of affairs continues until Walker comes across the fact that there are people in the world who walk dogs for their owners, and decides this is just the job for him (making a nicely judged play on words with his name and his new-found interest). Mum agrees to this move, while also demanding strict rules about his taking off his dog walking clothes and showering before coming near her. He is soon taking spaniel Stella for long walks and one day, when Stella experiences a fright, she begins to talk quite naturally to Walker. He is, of course, rather surprised at this, but delighted as well and it becomes clear he is a ‘dog whisperer’ who attracts dogs and can communicate with them. This is a good thing as there is a dastardly local villain who must be stopped in his ways and soon Walker and all the local dogs are in full-throated pursuit. Full of humour as well as some serious themes, the novel makes a wonderful addition to the literature for newly-confident readers and the multiplicity of small black and white drawings throughout the book will keep even more reluctant readers going. It’s a real cliff-hanger of a story and will appeal to all, especially those who love dogs. Lots of good detail and descriptive passages add to the fun, and the characterisation of both people and animals is splendid. A real winner, this one!
