Peter Finch is a poet and topographer who has written extensively on Cardiff, including four volumes of Real Cardiff in Seren's Real series. John Briggs has photographed Cardiff for more than 40 years and has a visual knowledge of the city equal to Finch's historical and literary takes. Seren has published three books of Brigg's images of Cardiff, Before the Deluge and Taken in Time , plus Newportrait . Walking the Valleys is a companion to their volume Walking Cardiff published in 2019.

North of Cardiff there is a confusing and anastomosing maze of major and minor roads all of which converge on Wales’s capital, like the rivers, through narrow built-up corridors. Our friendly authors navigate us accurately and clearly through the main settlements in this labyrinth. The book follows on from their successful and popular explorations of Cardiff, Walking Cardiff , which I reviewed a couple of years ago. There is an emphasis on the relatively recent industrial history of the area, but Peter Finch and John Briggs also have a penchant for the literary figures and the movers and shakers who have been responsible for creating the unique character of the place. There have been huge changes in the land over the past 40 years since the accelerated demise of the coal industry, and the area is probably changing faster now than it ever has in the past. As with Cardiff, Peter Finch is warmly familiar with the extraordinary number of poets and writers who haunt these valleys. Those still living would seem to be part of a distinctive local coterie. Using the copious public transport opportunities offered, our heroes have created an impressive number of short and revealing walks which are well documented, with useful maps provided to make it easy for anyone to follow their routes.
