Llandrindod Wells, the county town of Powys, has a wealth of Victorian and Edwardian buildings, as well as formal and informal parks and gardens. A network of recently improved rights of way surround the town, connecting with the beauty spots of Cefnllys and Alpine Bridge, the woodlands to the east and north of the town, the remains of the largest Roman fort in Wales (Castell Collen) and across the hill to the nearby village of Howey. Walking routes also connect Llandrindod Wells with some of the other towns and villages in the area. Builth Wells, the home of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show, can be reached by a varied 10 mile walk that includes the Carneddau Hills. There are also walks around Builth Wells and the hills to the south, with one route on firm surfaces throughout. Another route from Llandrindod Wells leads to Newbridge-on-Wye, around and near which there are a number of circular routes to be explored, including one that makes use of part of the Wye Valley Walk. The village of Llanwrthwl, between Newbridge-on-Wye and Rhayader, provides the starting point for two circular walks, one of which combines the Wye Valley Walk with part of Abergwesyn Common. A route leads from the village of Llanyre (across the valley from Llandrindod Wells) to Rhayader with the option of shortening this walk using a bus service about one mile from the course of the walk. A network of local buses, plus the scenic Heart of Wales Railway Line, connects Llandrindod Wells to the places mentioned in this guide. In addition to the walks to Builth Wells, Newbridge-on-Wye and Rhayader already mentioned, a bus service to Llandegley leads to the start of a linear walk back to Llandrindod Wells.
