In this very small concentrated area of South Wales there are some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country. They are primarily situated in woodland at a low level, and as such they are ideally suited for wet days! Many of these walks are also great for families or for those wanting a short evening walk or quick excursion between showers. The paths chosen are generally well trodden which, although great for navigation, means that they often become very muddy in wet weather. The rocks close to and around the falls can be extremely hazardous and anyone venturing for a closer look needs to take great care and ensure that their footing is secure. Some waterfalls require a deviation from the path to see them. Again this needs great care as the views are often from balconies perched high above the river. On hot summer days it can be very tempting to have a swim in one of many deep pools encountered. But the water is deep, often discoloured and usually cold. There are hidden undercut ledges below water level and submerged debris such as trees which could trap and hold you under. So we do NOT recommend this. Although the paths are as a rule good, supportive footwear with a good tread is needed. All the rivers in the area covered by this book respond extremely quickly to rainfall, often with catastrophic flooding. Whilst all may be well on a trodden path things can be very different if you are by the water's edge and should happen to slip! So use your common sense, take no risks, keep children under strict control and make sure you all return home safely. However, the lakes described are found in a much harsher environment high up in the mountains (with some exceptions).
