Mae ôl ei dychymyg drwy’r gyfres Wenfro; mae’n berson eithriadol o frwdfrydig dros yr agenda amgylcheddol, gwyrdd a thros roi cyfle i blant Cymru ddeall am eu gwlad o fewn cyd-destun y byd mawr. Llinos Mair is a familiar face in the creative world in Wales. As an experienced designer, living and working in west Wales, she is at ease creating visually appealing ideas. She is the face behind the clothing and gift company, Celtes, inspired by the words and sayings of Wales. Her imagination runs through the Wenfro package; she is an exceptionally enthusiastic supporter of environmental matters and of giving children in Wales an opportunity to understand their own country within the context of the wider world. This is one of a series aimed at children aged 4–7. The books are sturdy, brightly coloured and easy for small hands to hold. Both have as their central figure a grandmother, who, through a series of seasonal events provides information for her grandchildren Owen and Olwen, about the world around them and their cultural heritage. The series was obviously conceived as a Welsh-language publication, and this does at times impinge on the tenor of the narrative, dialogue and appearance of the text. The characters’ names may be difficult for English readers, who may also miss the significance of some details and conventions (ie.Mam-gu Iet-wen – grandmother living at Iet-wen). Possibly the titles read in tandem would help early learners to assimilate Welsh pronunciation of place names, and compare notices, but the series logo, with its words in Welsh remains a mystery. On a similar note, if Happy Horseshoes was read in isolation, understanding of the text in boxes on the opening page would be lost, as they are only in Welsh (eg 'DIM Sbwriel – Trysorau yn unig' and 'Dŵr Glaw'). In this story Mam-gu takes the children on an autumnal nature walk, along with Bwgi-bo the scarecrow and a pet spider Prydwen. They meet a range of animals about to hibernate, and a variety of hedgerow fruits, including the treasure of the title – blackberries to use both for jam-making, crumbles and pies, and as a natural dye for the sheep Glanwen’s wool. Although the story moves along with pace, there is little actual movement within the pages. The characters repeatedly stare directly at the reader in statuesque poses; the reader is not drawn into the picture. This may well distance the experience of the tale itself, which is a familiar autumn story.
