Interwoven is the story of Al Capone's Welsh right-hand man, Murray the Hump. The story takes us from Wales to London and the USA, mixing the real lives of cattle drovers with fantastical fairy elements.

Phil Okwedy is a professional storyteller based in Pembrokeshire, though he performs internationally. He adapts traditional, local stories, and creates new narratives for adults and children alike, and leads story-based walking tours around Lydstep Headland.

The product of a prodigious story-teller, who has combined Welsh legends with fairy stories, ghost stories and a Welshman compatriot of Al Capone, this book has the true ‘voice’ of the professional. One can hear him telling the story with verve and enthusiasm. It is, by and large, a single story about a lad, Wil, from Moylgrove, and his lazy, mean brothers who are out to marry Megan, daughter of a rich farmer and beloved of Wil. He goes to seek his fortune in order to be able to marry his love and in the process has lots of adventures, sometimes dark and sinister and sometimes full of light and warmth. King Arthur and his sleeping knights under the hill come into the tale, along with Wil having to learn a lesson about greed. He has a hard time, but he is a plucky lad, and we feel sure he will reach his goal in the end. Interspersed with the main story is a set of four chapters about Llewelyn Murray Humphries, son of a poor farming family who emigrated to Chicago in the 1890s. He grew up to become a lawyer and the right-hand man of Al ‘Scarface’ Capone. After Capone was jailed for tax evasion, it was Llewelyn who took on his empire and money-laundered the lot. It’s a good story, but quite what it has to do with Wil and his amazing adventures isn’t clear! The book has wonderful black and white silhouette style illustrations that are magical in themselves. An excellent choice for those interested in folk and magic tales – and also in the seamier side of life in the States in the 1920s.
