Eloise Williams grew up in Llantrisant and lives in West Wales, very close to the sea. Having studied Drama, she went on to work as an actor for over ten years before studying for a Masters in Creative Writing at Swansea University. She was chosen to be the first Children's Laureate Wales in September 2019. Wilde will be her fourth book with Firefly.

‘Yes, I got kicked out of school on purpose. No, I did not want to be sent to Witch Point.’ So begins the story of Wilde, an 11-year-old girl who knows she is different. ‘Weird’, she says. Birds follow her, and she sometimes finds herself in unexpected places. Witch Point in Wales is where her Aunt Mae lives, and because her father travels for his work, she can’t stay at home. Schools have always been a nightmare, and she has got through lots of them. Starting this new one at Witch Point is unfortunate at the beginning when the class bully takes her on and is seriously unpleasant. But for the first time in her life she makes a friend, a good friend and things seem to be getting better. The town has its own folk tale about a witch called Winter, who was hanged for terrible crimes. Wilde feels sick when she hears this story and can’t believe it to be true, and when the class begins rehearsing for a play about the fable, she is appalled. Then the curses begin. They appear in the bags of almost everyone in the class. They tell secrets that no one has known before and are quite nasty. Who is doing it? Could it be Wilde? She is new after all. There is lots of adventure in this book, lots of humour too, and a very capable heroine who must learn to accept who she really is. A page turner, this story will be enjoyed by children of 9+ (and by adults who still find pleasure in the best children’s books).
